National bank lending by property category

At June 30, 2026, FDIC-insured institutions reported $3.06 trillion across nonfarm nonresidential, multifamily, and construction and development loans. These three categories represented 21.99% of total loans and leases.

Nonfarm nonresidential and multifamily balances grew from a year earlier, while construction and development balances declined. Outstanding balances reflect repayments, originations, sales and other changes; they do not measure new loan commitments or lender appetite by themselves.

This report covers the national banking system. It does not rank individual banks or measure regulatory CRE concentration. Nonfarm nonresidential includes owner-occupied property, and construction and development includes residential development.

Sources and methodology

Source: FDIC Quarterly Banking Profile, republished by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis through FRED’s assets and liabilities table. Release August 27, 2026; retrieved 2026-09-12. Reporting universe: FDIC-insured commercial banks and savings institutions. Quarter-end balances are not seasonally adjusted and may be revised.

Percent change = (current balance − comparison balance) ÷ comparison balance × 100. Category share divides its Q2 2026 balance by total loans and leases of $13,936,266 million. The combined three-category total is an ACREN calculation, not a published regulatory CRE exposure measure. It includes owner-occupied nonfarm nonresidential property and residential construction, and should not be compared with supervisory capital concentration thresholds.

Institution financials were unavailable from the FDIC BankFind API during this retrieval. See the official FDIC data-downloads guide. Accordingly, no bank-level concentration ranking is published. These aggregate trends do not identify property debt, loan maturity, borrower distress, bank safety or lending availability in a particular metro.

How Acren helps

Keep national credit context beside property evidence

Use this report to understand national bank lending trends, then review available recorded mortgage and property evidence in Acren for the asset you are researching. This keeps broad credit context separate from what the property documents actually show.

A national lending total cannot identify the property’s current lender, loan availability or maturity. Check the recorded instruments and current lender documentation.
